Albir Lighthouse Walk: Big Views, Sensible Shoes & a Well-Earned Lunch
This is the sort of holiday walk that starts with “just a little wander” and ends with everyone discussing lunch. The Albir lighthouse route offers a lovely reason to get outside, but a few practical decisions make the difference between a good outing and regretting your footwear.
Published 26 October 2026 · Practical advice for your holiday
How long is the Albir lighthouse walk?
The surfaced route from the park entrance to the lighthouse is approximately 2.5 km one way. Returning by the same route makes it around 5 km, before adding the walk from your bus stop, parking place or the seafront.
That distinction matters. A description saying “2.5 km” can sound like a quick leg-stretch until you remember you have to get back. Plan the complete outing, including breaks, photographs and the slowest comfortable pace in the group. We would leave a generous morning or afternoon rather than slotting it between two fixed bookings.
Start with the right destination
Travel to Albir, then find the signed entrance to the Serra Gelada park route. Search for the route entrance or information point when planning, rather than treating a pin at the lighthouse as somewhere a taxi will drop you.
Benidorm’s bus line 010 serves Albir, but the bus ride and the walk to the entrance are separate parts of the journey. Check the official route and stops, then look at the walking connection before you leave.
For a seafront outing without the longer walk, use our Albir day-trip guide. You do not have to reach the lighthouse to justify the bus fare.
What the route is like
The main lighthouse route follows a surfaced path through the natural park. It is a different proposition from taking a rough mountain trail across the Serra Gelada ridge. Stay on the signed route and do not let a tempting shortcut turn a straightforward outing into something you did not prepare for.
There are coastal views along the way, so stop somewhere suitable to enjoy them instead of trying to walk and photograph everything at once. At the end, the lighthouse also houses an interpretation centre. Check its current opening information if going inside is important to your visit.
The local council describes the lighthouse path as accessible, but that does not automatically answer every individual access question. Ask tourist information about the current surface, gradients, facilities and your particular requirements before travelling. Distance, weather and comfort still matter.
What to bring — without packing for an expedition
- Comfortable footwear: shoes you are happy walking several kilometres in, rather than a pair that looks nice beside the pool.
- Drinking water: carry it from the start instead of relying on finding a shop along the route.
- Sun protection: a hat and sunscreen are useful, even when a coastal breeze makes the day feel cooler.
- A suitable layer: check the forecast and think about how the return may feel after a stop.
- A charged phone: for your travel plan and photographs. Leave enough battery for the journey home.
- A small snack if helpful: especially with children, or with the friend whose mood follows a strict meal schedule.
Choose your moment and keep the plan flexible
Check weather and any park access notices before setting off. On a hot day, consider an earlier outing and allow more breaks. In shorter daylight months, leave enough time to return in daylight rather than assuming you have a summer-length evening.
If conditions do not suit your group, change the plan. A shorter wander and lunch in Albir are a sensible alternative, not a failed expedition. Check locally before relying on the interpretation centre being open; walking access and building opening times are different things.
A pleasant way to build the day
- Check transport and conditions. Work out your return as well as your arrival.
- Walk at a comfortable pace. Keep the group together and make breaks part of the plan.
- Enjoy the end point. Leave time to look around without making the return a rush.
- Head back towards Albir. If lunch is the reward, check where and when you intend to eat.
We would keep a separate Altea Old Town visit for another day if the full walk already fills your energy budget. See Altea or Albir? if you are still deciding what kind of outing you want.
And once you are back in Benidorm, check the latest entertainment guide. You may have earned a sit-down, but the evening need not be over.
